| This file is being provided for you to assist you in
your new venture on the Internet. It contains some very basic material
that you may already be familiar with, and is not intended to pick on any
one, but you would be very surprised at some of the questions we get.
|
1. You do not need to leave your computer on to get E-mail or to keep messages in your E-mail files. All messages are left on your server's machine until you retrieve them and read them, or erase them. Sort of like going to the post office to get your mail. It is waiting there for you until you can pick it up.
2. No one can log on to your personal computer from the Internet, unless you are running specialized software, or have the correct Ethernet access card plugged into your system.
3. Any information you download is on your computer, and should be virus screened if you are concerned about protecting your information from stray viruses.
4. Just because your Internet Browser,(Netscape or IE) wants to use a particular plug-in or application does not mean you have to use it. It only means you can not view a particular part of someone's page or screen unless you do.
5. Your E-mail directories keep tags in them unless you clean them out regularly. This can be done (in Netscape) by clicking on the File tab at the top of the page and choosing the option to Empty Trash on Local Mail. With Internet Explorer, click on the Tools tab at the top of the page and choose the option to Empty the Deleted Items folder. This will free up space and allow you better use of your E-mail directory on your server's machine. Remember to empty your trash directory often. Don't save too many e-mail messages in a mail folder in your browser, as this tends to eventually crash your mail program.
6. When you get the error message that claims your computer has performed an illegal function, it doesn't mean that you have done anything wrong, or that something is broken. It just means that you may have to Restart your computer to flush something out of memory. Depending on your memory and hard drive configurations, you might just have too many applications running at once or maybe tried to print while changing a browser page.
7. Your E-mail address is simple. It is your user name, followed by the @ symbol, then yourserviceprovider.com. For example. cranfan@cranbare.com. Do not use capital letters or leave any spaces in your address. It will screw up the net and won't work.
8. If you have a direct connection to the Internet, there is no need to subscribe to other services such as Prodigy, AOL, or Compuserve. These services provide the same, or lesser service than a direct connection to the Internet. Most other services have a long distance fee from this area.
